TOADS FOR SUPPER

To be engaged to three girls simultaneously, accused by one of them of being the father of her unborn child, and then rusticated by the university authorities, are severe setbacks in the career of any student. But Amadi returns to his village to face not only his parents but also the shocked rage of the whole community at whose expense he is being educated.

How Amadi got himself into this situation, and his efforts to extricate himself from it, is the subject of this first novel. The author’s understanding, sympatthy and insight into the undergraduate life in Nigeria today make this much more than the farce that Amadi’s predicament implies. Mixed with robust high spirits, there is poetry as well as tragedy and an underlying genuineness that make this light-hearted description of life in Nigeria both memorable and haunting.
